Student Testimonials:
"Your talents are awesome. Just as important, however, your teaching style, patience, humor and positive attitude all made the class fun as well as instructional. I appreciated all the personal attention and demonstration! You make a great team!"
Mark Laub, MN

"I learned so much about tool usage by watching you, Leonid, and I was continuously motivated by Svetlana's cheerleading! I have so much more confidence now and have grown as a carver and an artist. I can't thank you enough! I'm proud of my project and everyone I've shown it too just loves it!."
Mike Reinhart, PA

"I just wanted to thank you again for another great class. I can’t believe how much I learned, and how much I enjoyed the weekend – even thought it was very hard work! I could not have learned so much in ten years of carving on my own, or trying to learn from books. Without a doubt, I made the right choice in attending your classes. It was worth every sacrifice my family made for me to come to Philadelphia. Thank you so much for being willing to share your time and talents!

Course Description :

Beginner Class: Organic Sculptural Forms
In this rigorous three-day course, the student will carve a wonderful pair of flowers that can be displayed as a stand-alone sculptural piece, or can serve as a beautiful appliqué to a cabinet door or other piece of furniture. After observing master carver, Zakurdayev, the student will immediately apply the techniques of design transfer, carving tool usage, use of vernier calipers to establish levels, undercutting and surface modeling to achieve life-like effects. Tool sharpening will be demonstrated and time for practice will be provided. The basswood blank and the pattern will be provided. It is recommended that carvers of all abilities take this course prior to any of our other courses.

Through the production of the sculptural carving, the three day course covers the listed areas below and so much more.
1. Tools sharpening technique.
2. Design: How to develop a design that is translatable into a carved form.
3. Design transfer techniques carving blank or block stock.
4. Calculating high and low relief levels and tools and techniques to control depth.
5. How to create and bring to life each element in a design.
6. What carving tools to buy and which to avoid, (how to fill out your base set of tools.)
7. Defining and how to avoid common carving mistakes.
8. Undercutting and dramatizing the sculptural and realistic detail in a carving.
9. Preparing the carving for finish.
10. Master's Critique of student's work. (what has the student learned, what areas the student will need more focus and practice and how best to achieve excellence in carved work.

Advanced Class: Low Relief Panel with Shell and Acanthus Leaves
The techniques of low relief carving will be taught in this class. Each student will learn design transfer, setting in and grounding, separation of elements and surface modeling in relief. This is a very challenging three-day course especially suited to furniture and architectural carvers, but all carvers will find it invaluable. The techniques learned and the design used can be adapted by the individual student for his or her own projects, and the project itself can be displayed with pride by the student!

Grape Vine Class:
This intermediate class delves further into the carving of organic forms and can be taken at any time after completing the beginner‚s course. Surface modeling and undercutting techniques will be emphasized in this demanding three-day class. The project lends itself to applications such as wine racks, wine cabinets, or wall decoration.

Art Nouveau Mirror Frame Class:
Frames are one of Master Carver Leonid Zakurdayev's specialties, and their design, construction and carving will be examined in this highly informative three-day class. The project appears deceptively simple, but is definitely for the intermediate to advanced carver. The project serves as an artistic examination of the use of lines as decorative elements and nowhere are lines as beautifully applied as in Art Nouveau design. Construction of frames will be discussed, and rabbeting of the back side will be performed in order to receive a mirror or picture. A major focus of this course will be on drawing and developing designs. This demanding three-day course will prove indispensable to any woodcarver, but will be of special interest to furniture makers.
